The LIFE CYCLES exhibition at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles
Wednesday, November 30th
6:00pm / 7:15pm

EVENING TIMELINE:

Exhibition:    LIFE CYCLES | A Bamboo Exploration with Tanabe Chikuunsai IV

Time:            6:00pm

About the artist: A fourth-generation bamboo artist, Tanabe Chikuunsai IV dramatically pushes the boundaries of the artform. As he weaves the bamboo strips, Chikuunsai reflects upon connections, or tsunagari, between humans and nature, present and past generations, and the cultures he brings together through his installations. When an exhibition closes, he dismantles each installation and saves the bamboo strips to use in his next work—creating a generational connection between his works, deliberately avoiding waste, and extending the bamboo’s life cycle. How this exhibition correlates with this week’s Mindvalley Café topic:

When creating events, my thoughts and actions are rooted in serendipity. I choose a date and then I look for similarities between what is available in our beautiful city of Los Angeles and what Mindvalley has prepared as a framework for our global community.

As I explored options of happenings in L.A., I came across Chikuunsai’s exhibition at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles. (Fun note: I actually worked with JAPAN HOUSE before moving to Tokyo in 2019). Chikuunsai’s artwork is of tradition, renewal and rebirth, repurposing the old, and creating the new. I found it to be in appropriate alignment with this week’s Mindvalley Café topic Good Grief ... Grieving our old selves and the collective.... I find celebration in grieving our old selves through the cycles of life – how we are constantly redefining ourselves, repurposing our experiences combined with current outside influences, and those inherited to us by past generations. My intention, fellow Mindvalley friends, is to experience collectively and individually Chikuunsai’s artwork as a catapult for this week’s topic. After enjoying the exhibition, I invite you to join our tribe for a light dinner at Cho Oishi, located on the 4th floor within the same complex as JAPAN HOUSE. More information below.
